How to Change Background Noise Canceling Settings in Zoom

Learn how to suppress your background noise adequately on a Zoom call.

Zoom has released an update full of new features that are sure to enhance your video conferencing experience. You can now add filters to your videos, adjust and enhance videos for low light, share presentations as virtual backgrounds, and more.

One of the additions to Zoom is a setting for the Background Noise control. When we work from home, there may be a lot of background noise – maybe you have noisy neighbors, children or pets in your own home, or there is construction going on nearby. All of this can make for a very unpleasant and embarrassing video calling experience. Now, Zoom automatically suppresses background noise.

But what is the inaccurate auto adjustment, and lots of noise still seeping through Zoom’s noise filter? Or what if you put on background music for an informal gathering or party and the music is completely blocked? Ugh, what a nightmare. How can you tell Zoom when to aggressively suppress background noise and when to easily do it?

Easy. With Zoom’s new Background Noise setting, you can control what the other person on the call will hear. Click on the ‘Settings’ option (gear icon) on the home screen to open Zoom settings.

From the navigation menu on the left, go to the ‘Audio’ settings.

Now, you will see an option for “Suppress Background Noise”, and it will be Auto. Click on the drop-down menu to expand the options. There are three more options available for the setting: High, Medium, and Low.

If you want Zoom to aggressively suppress all background noise, select ‘High’. Select ‘Low’ if you want most of the noise to come in, for example, if you want to enjoy the atmosphere with background music. Select ‘Medium’ for situations that require something in between, such as when you need background noise but need to suppress noise for keyboard keys.

You can also disable background suppression completely. Zoom provides the option to add buttons to have an original sound without pressing any background in the meeting. Go to ‘Advanced’ settings.

Then toggle the setting for ‘Show In Meeting option to “Enable Native Sound” from microphone “.

When you enable this feature, the option to ‘Turn On Original Voice’ will appear in the meeting. When you click on it, Zoom won’t suppress any background noise at all.

The Zoom feature to suppress background noise is great, but the ability to control how much noise to suppress just puts the cherry on top. Adjust background noise cancellation to suit your needs in various circumstances.
