How to Export Google Maps Route Data

How to Export Google Maps Route Data

Few mapping tools are just as powerful and data-rich than Google Maps. Completely free to use, you can use Google Maps data to find new locations, plan your next vacation, find your way back, or get from A to B.

While Google Maps does have offline maps, you may prefer to use an alternative mapping app for moving around. If you want to take Google Maps route data and import it into another app or service, you can. Exporting Google Maps route data requires third-party tools, but it can be done – here’s how.

Create a Route Map on Google Maps

Before you can export route data on Google Maps, you need the actual route to export. The best way to do this is to use the Google Maps website on your Windows PC or Mac, as you will need to export data using a third-party service at a later stage.

On the Google Maps website, type a query into the search bar. For example, from 10 Downing Street to Buckingham Place you will find directions between the residence of the British Prime Minister and the official residence of the British monarch, both in London.

Google Maps will immediately try to find the best route for you to take from A to B. You can add further points on the route by clicking the Add Destination button.

1

You can also find the best route for your travel mode. For example, if you want to walk, take a bus, cycle or fly, select one of the options above your destination in the top left.

2(6)

After you create a route, you must export it as a URL. To do this, press the menu icon at the top left.

3(3)

From the Google Maps menu, hit the Share or embed map option.

4

In the Share box, hit the Copy Link button.

5(2)

This will copy the direct link to your route map as a URL to your clipboard. You can then use these links with third-party services to export them to other formats.

Converts Google Maps Route Data to GPX File Format

Many routing and mapping data applications and services use the GPX file format to route data. GPX data is a format used for GPS devices (GPX stands for GPS Exchange Format), providing information about routes, waypoints, and more. This is a common format, but there is no built-in method for exporting to GPX on Google Maps.

To get around this, you have to use a third party service. For example, the Maps to GPX site uses a Google Maps URL (as created above), collects route data from it, and then saves it as a GPX file.

You can then import this data in other third-party applications or services. There are several apps available for Android and iOS that support this format, providing you with offline route data.

To use Maps to GPX, paste your Google Maps URL into the box provided on the website, then press the Let’s Go key (or press enter on your keyboard).

6(2)

The site will immediately create a GPX file for you to download. Provide a suitable file name and save it to your PC.

You can then use them in other online services, share files wirelessly to your Android device, or transfer files to your iPhone, depending on the mobile device you use.

Using GPX Data Files

Once you have a GPX file, you will need to find a suitable application or service to use it.

Sites like GPS Visualizer will allow you to convert GPX files into a format you can follow on your Windows PC or Mac. This will display route data on other maps, allowing you to see directions, points of interest to visit on the route itself, and more.

7

You can also use GPX files with Android, iPhone, or iPad apps. An app like GPX Viewer for Android devices will take a GPX file and turn it into a viewable map route that you can follow.

You can do this by pressing the menu icon> Open File in the GPX Viewer application. From there, select your GPX file for loading data. You should then be able to visualize it in map view.

8

For iPhone users, you can use an app like GPX-Viewer to view your data and overlay it to Apple Maps or other formats.

Like the above services, GPX-Viewer allows you to import GPX files. It also allows you to organize them into folders, combine multiple GPX files into one route, as well as view additional information such as ETAs for your routes.

You may also be able to import GPX data from Google Maps to a dedicated GPS device. GPS devices from manufacturers such as TomTom and Garmin support GPX files, allowing you to import your Google Maps route data directly.

Go to Places Using Google Maps Data

Once you start using Google Maps, you may decide to stick with it, but there are alternatives you can use. By exporting route data to a GPX file, you can use Google Maps to plan your trips. You can then take the route data and export it to other services.

Google Maps has many advantages which make it a good choice to consider for everyday use. You can add your own business to Google Maps to help others find it, especially if they use AR navigation on Google Maps to find their way around your city or town.
