How to Pop Up Chat and Video Window on the Microsoft Team

Microsoft continues to add new features to the Team application on a regular basis and often pays attention to user requests. One very requested feature is the chat and video pop-out window, which was created through an update. I am sure you want to know everything about it. Right now, Microsoft released phase-wise, so be patient if you haven’t received it.

I will guide you through the entire process on various platforms and steps on how to use it. You can also use it in some use cases.

Let’s get started.

Chat Window Popup on the Desktop App Team

It will work on desktop applications for Windows and macOS. Sorry, Linux users. The interface is largely consistent across platforms. Open the Team application, start chatting with team members like you always do, and there are several ways to clear the chat window.

Click the newly added ‘box with outer arrow’ universal icon at the top right of the chat window. It should read ‘Pop out chat’ when you hover your mouse cursor over it. You can also double-click on the user or group chat avatar for it. Want to give an order? Try / pop command to bring up the chat window.

You will not see a confirmation dialog for that action and it saves time. The chat will open in a new window and allow you to explore or use other tabs in the Microsoft Team.

The pop-out feature works in single and group chat windows. You can drag the window to wherever you want and resize it to your liking. Do you chat with many people in separate chats? Now, you can pop-out all chat windows simultaneously.

Chat Window Popup on the Web and Mobile Apps Teams

I don’t need to share steps for the mobile and web applications. That’s because the pop-up feature isn’t available on the smartphone app. The reason could be because the smartphone has a small screen. There aren’t enough screens to bring up a window.

Benefits of Pop-up Chat Window

The Microsoft Teams application packs several features. This is a communication and collaboration application with settings that help with the same thing. Thus, users and team members use it to chat, call, and do various other things. Some examples can work on files from Office 365 suite applications, third-party applications, PDF files that you just uploaded, and more.

The chat window or video / audio call fills the entire screen, making it difficult for participants to see or access anything. How can you discuss presentations or work / edit files during a call?

Bringing up a chat or call window allows you to continue to communicate in a separate window while still working on that Word document. This is a feature that Microsoft should have released before, but I’m glad they listened to their feedback.

Can You Pop-Out Other Tabs

As discussed above, there are many other tabs that we can make on the Microsoft Team. Can we delete this tab too? Unfortunately, the answer is no. You can only bring up the chat window. Video and audio calls get different treatment which I will discuss in the next point.

Some of you might want to delete the tab too. For example, you work on two separate documents in two tabs. Instead of clicking tabs to go back and forth, you can eject one tab and use the Alt + Tab keyboard shortcut to switch between open windows. That will save a lot of time and make it comfortable.

Regardless of the tab you have chosen, clicking the pop-out window pop-up button will pull out the chat window only. Does not work with tabs

Audio / Video Call Pop-Out Window

You cannot delete the audio / video call window in Microsoft Teams, but you can enter it. When you connect a video call, you can still choose all options in the left sidebar, such as File.

Clicking on one of the options will appear in the video window or reduce its size and allow you to access the entire user interface.

You can still see the participants of the call, even in a smaller window. You can return to full screen whenever you want by clicking on the video window once.

Did you know that you can bring up the chat window and pop-up window together? That will allow you to chat, video call, and work in any tab or file at the same time.

Release Them Chat Windows

Microsoft has released the pop-out chat window feature in stages over the past week or two. Some users still haven’t received an update, but they will accept. It’s only a matter of time. In the meantime, I suggest that you choose whatever features you want in the future on the Voice of the User Team site. If the feature you are looking for is not listed, you can create it. Note that this is not for troubleshooting or other support. Keep on popping up.
